This winter the latest craze has come from Denmark, but this time I think everyone should embrace the concept. Hygge, which loosely pronounced hoo-ga, because there is no formal translation. The words meaning is to have cosy, happy warm feeling, along with contentment in your life.
You can understand why Denmark has created Hygge, due to extremely cold weather and up to 17 hours of darkness a day through the winter period. However, they are shown in polls as one of the happiest countries to live in so, we should all create a Hygge in our lives, especially through the winter months. Here are our top tips on getting Hygge into your life.
Dim the lights in the evening and create a warm glow to your room with candles. Make sure they are on a heat proof surface and do not leave them burning while you are not in the room. The more candles, the more you will create a cosy warm atmosphere. If you do not want to use candles, fairy lights can create the same effect.
Dinner with Family and Friends
With the colder weather, we do not always want to go out for dinner and having dinner parties do not always have to be a grand formal affair. Sometimes the small cosy dinners with your loved ones are the best. The Hygge way is simply good food, why not ask a few of your closest and dearest around but everyone join in with the preparation of the food. Tell stories together, laugh and be merry.
Get into Cosy woollies
There is nothing better than getting home from work and putting on your pj’s or your comfortable joggers. To indulge in the Hygge, sit down with a warm cup of chocolate or coffee. The Danish community are big coffee drinkers and I must admit there is nothing better than a big mug of coffee by a warm fire.
Get Back to Nature
I know it is cold outside, but wrap up warm and embrace mother nature on a good walk. To experience Hygge to the full you must get back to nature. If you are not up to going on a walk, then bring nature inside. Decorate your home with natural wood floors or stone floors, wooden furniture. If that is too much, just put some logs in a basket by the fire it will help get that warm feeling.
Loose your phone
To truly have full Hygge experience, then try and put your phone away, turn off all technology and 21st Century living. Try it for an hour and just enjoy the moment. If you do need to fill the hour, try reading a book in a quiet area in your home. Make the area comfortable by adding blankets and cushions. Curl up with that favourite book and let the warm happy time wash over you. Once you have done this, you will want to make this a regular experience.
