Half term is nearly here and we at Elegantini wanted to give you a few ideas on how to spend the half term with your little ones.
Pumpkin carving is a tradition that has become so popular in the last 15 years. Today there are lots of farms offering pick your own pumpkins. It is a great afternoon out with the children letting them choose their own pumpkin to help carve or decorate. We do advice that after allowing them to draw their design on the pumpkin, an adult should do the carving for young children. Pumpkins come in all different shapes and sizes so its great fun deciding what characters they can create. After scooping out the pumpkins, save the seeds and if you have room in the garden, grow your own pumpkins next year with the children.
Just because it is getting cold does not mean you have to stop having picnics. Lay a blanket on the floor of your kitchen or living room and create an indoor picnic. You could even build a den out of sheets and pillows and have a picnic in the den. Get the kids to help make the treats for the picnic too. Invite their favourite teddies and toys and make it a party.
Christmas Cake and Pudding Time
Although it is debated by the experts when you should start making the Christmas cake and pudding, we found this is a popular time to make the cake and puddings with the children. The smell in the house from the soaked fruit is amazing. Just remember to wrap them well in parchment paper and then cling film. Children love to help make this special cake and don’t forget to make a wish when you stir.
Take a walk in your local park or wood and collect the Autumn leaves, conkers and acorns. When home your little ones can create a master piece of Autumn artwork to keep or give to other family members. A great technique for the children to learn is rubbing. Place a piece of paper over the leaves and rub a crayon or pencil over the paper. This makes a great leaf rubbing picture and the children will think its magic.
Visit Free Galleries and Museums
There are lots of museums and art galleries that are free to enter or have offers on over half term. The Turner Gallery in Margate is free to enter and has a special half term holiday workshop on. Some farms are open for half term, which the children will love seeing all the farm animals. You do not always have to pay for days out, research online the free places local to you.
