Autumn is here, the leaves on the trees are starting to fall and there is a definite nip in the air telling us the seasons is changing. Let’s embrace Autumn and get a cosy feel to your home. Everyone does the Spring clean, but we should all embrace an Autumn clean too. Through the summer the windows and doors have been wide open, allowing dust and pollution to settle in our homes over the summer months. This is the time of year we all come in from the garden and start to look at homes for a cosier feel. We all love our homes when they are sparkling clean. Here are a few tips from our expert housekeepers to help you this Autumn.
Now the nights are drawing in you may notice more dust and dirt on your windows as we are turning the lights on earlier in the evening now. Clean your windows on a cloudy day as it will be easier to see smears. Over the summer the dust has built up and not to forget the summer bugs, all windows would benefit with a little sparkle this time of year.
It is time to put all the summer clothes away and get the winter clothes out of storage. If you are lucky enough to have enough space not to have to do this, it is still a great time to declutter. All the clothes you did not wear last year give to charity. Try to organise the clothes into sections in your wardrobe for example; trousers, skirts, cardigans. This makes it easier on those dark mornings to find the right clothes to wear.
In the autumn it always feels like we have more cob webs appearing in our homes. Although cobwebs are acceptable for Halloween, we do not want our home looking like a haunted house for the rest of the season. These are easy to get rid of very quickly. In each room, use a hoover nozzle to get to the corners of the ceilings and walls or an extendable duster works just as well. Take down curtains and air them outside on a windy day, this will help bring a freshness back to the curtains and help remove any dust. If they have not been cleaned for a while, it may be worth having them professionally cleaned to help bring them back to life again.
De-Clutter Your Kitchen
This is the perfect time of year to de-clutter and give your kitchen a deep clean. It will not be long before you will be tackling the Christmas pudding and Cake, so don’t put off going through the cupboards and clearing out all the out of date products. You will then have more room for all those kitchen gadgets everyone gets every year for Christmas, and puts to the back of a cupboard.
Now the temperatures are cooling, we are all reaching for the thicker duvets. When you change the winter duvet, get the summer duvet cleaned if it will not fit into your washing machine, take it to your local dry cleaners or laundrette to do it for you. It is also a great time to wash all the pillows and cushions as you will be indoors more now. This removes all the dust mite that has built up over the months and helps prevent allergies.
Condensation is the biggest battle for many homes this time of year. If possible, try to vent the rooms of your home every day by opening windows, especially kitchens and bathrooms. Wipe down the window frames and window sills every morning to remove all moisture from the windows. If this is not tackled, a build-up of mould will form. Tea tree oil is a great tip to remove the mould as this acts as anti-fungal solutions.
